Sonia & Moodle LTI Integration

Sonia and Moodle support a protocol for integration called Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) which is an education technology designed by IMS Global that enables Education Platforms, Apps and Tools like Sonia and Moodle to communicate with each other.

It is a high-level form of integration that helps a user move from one application to another easily without logging in and out of multiple systems; essentially simplifies navigation between these applications.

In standard LTI terminology, a platform/consumer can connect to a tool/provider.  But what does that mean?

An example of a typical platform/consumer is a Learning Management System (LMS) such as Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, etc.

An example of a typical tool/provider would be Turnitin.

The result of connecting these two types together is that an assignment within an LMS can call a tool such as Turnitin to be verified, etc.

Q: Is Sonia a platform/consumer or a tool/provider?

Sonia is one of a select few applications that can be both a Platform/Consumer and a Tool/Provider depending on which LTI Application you want to connect it with:

• In this instance, with Moodle, the Platform/Consumer is Moodle and Sonia is the Tool/Provider.
• If you want to connect Sonia to Turnitin, then Sonia is the Platform/Consumer, and Turnitin is the Tool/Provider.

This document details how to setup Sonia and Moodle using the LTI Platform/Consumer (v1.1) so that students can log into the Moodle system and then click on an Assignment within Moodle and easily navigate to Sonia Online.

Please note: Prior to Sonia 2021Q1, the external provider in Sonia is called LTI Consumer and not LTI Platform/Consumer ( v1.1)
